The Most Expensive Jewellery Box

It did not seem like yesterday when I first knew Lynn. It seemed like decades. We were classmates since Primary One, but we hardly noticed each other in the crowded class of 55 students. I knew Chin Howe, Lynn’s neighbour who happened to sit beside me from Primary One until Primary Three. I knew Chia Mei, the girl who had been in the same kindergarten class with me. I knew Shaw Cheng, the boy who never gets tired of picking a fight with me. I knew Keelan, the Australian-Chinese mixed boy who was also my kindergarten classmate. I knew a lot of people, but not Lynn.

The first time I noticed Lynn was in Primary Three, when she got to be one of the top three students in the class. I was in top five. We still didn’t talk much to each other and I could only remember her as the tall girl in class who always wore a Minnie Mouse hair band. Oh, there’s something else about her, her dad drove the Classic Mercedes Benz back then.

In Primary Five, we got closer because she was sitting in front of me. I was not happy with the teacher’s arrangement, as Lynn was taller and so sometimes she would block my view. That time, she still wore her Minnie Mouse hair band, which made her head bigger and blocked more of my view. Never in my life have I disliked Minnie Mouse so much.

One day after recess, I was accused for simply throwing rubbish in the class. Cleanliness was like the top priority in our Chinese school, so the teacher was very mad at me. Using her cane, she threatened to beat me if I refuse to admit my mistake, but it was not my fault. The whole class was very quiet, except of the voice of the teacher shouting at me and me denying it. Then all of the sudden, both of us went quiet. It was not because the teacher had gotten the idea that I right, or that I had been forced to admit it, it was because Lynn cried. I knew Lynn did not throw the rubbish and she was not the one who accused me, but she just cried. Somehow her crying did its magic on the teacher and I was forgiven.

“Why did you cry back then?” I asked her after a few years.

“I don’t know. I just felt like crying,” she replied. No matter what the reason was, that incident did make our friendship stronger, though it was from that day onwards too, Lynn had been crowned ‘The Crying Baby’. She would cry for anything, a simple story, a simple card, a simple sentence, … She could win every time in our lame Who-Can-Cry-The-Fastest competition.

Before Primary Five ended, Lynn gave me an invitation card one day. It was folded like a letter, with a Hello Kitty in Kimono printed on the corner where the stamp supposed to be. In the center, it was written ‘Dear Connie Tang, Holiday ‘MOVIE’ing at Riverside Cineplex’. Below it was a pair of Hello Kitties in blue and pink. Inside was the detail of the event, even the dress code was written on it. That was the first thing Lynn gave me. I can still recall the details of the card because I still keep it nicely in my drawer now. Since then, giving each other birthday presents has been our yearly ritual, sometimes we have Christmas presents too. Handbags, earrings, necklaces, purses, cosmetics, cards, handmade decos, books, …

This year, Lynn made me a white furry jewellery box before she went back to her university. I’m using it to put some of my earrings.

Thanks Lynn. I know friendship hardly last forever, especially when I’m the engineer and you’re the dentist; it’s like the chicken talking to the duck when we’re trying to tell each other what we’ve learnt in our universities. But I do hope it will last until the day when we get bored of each other. You know I always envy you for your fine hands? Even though I do like art crafts like you too, I can hardly do anything as fine as yours. I think you got the gift from your mother, since she can bake one of the best cheese cake and cheese sticks I’ve ever tasted.

Oh ya, by the way, you’re right…The fur does come off easily. I think you know I have allergy right?

aiyer eng eng, later lynn cry reading this. haha. so your blog is talking about your friends now? anyway, i'll add to the 'lynn tribute'

Scene 1
the first time i met lynn was when i was in primary 5. mental arithmetic class. there were two sessions in the afternoon. the teacher was drilling me for competition so my session began second half of the 1st session and went on till the first half of the 2nd session. lynn was in the second session.

*kim is guai-ly doing her exercises. lynn walks in with fooooooood. she sits down near kim*

lynn: which school do you go to?
kim: ummm st paul?
lynn's friend: other people ask for names first you ask which school they go to. -_-''

Scene 2
1D used to share classrooms with 3D. lynn was in 3D. usually she'd hang around cos she was just slow in packing her stuff. (hehe ^^) then she'd talk to random innocent form 1-ers. don't know why she did that. but by the end of the year she knew the whole class. xD

Scene 3
kim goes to lynn's class to find her for some reason (think it was GB related) anywayyyyy, kim walks in, sees lynn's table.

huge pencil case on one side, foldable calendar in one corner, array of colour pens arranged neatly on the table.

o_O

lynn (you better be reading this), of ALLLLLLLLL my seniors, i've admired you the MOST for your CRAZY ORGANISATIONAL SKILLS!!! like seriously you're my role model. in that sense. lol.

i can just imagine the way when you become a dentist all your tools will be arranged nicely on the try in perfect order, from big to small. lol

Let's just say that I have nothing else to write at this moment, so this kinda theme gonna last for a while, hehe.

About Lynn...
1. She is very RANDOM. In Primary 5, she wrote some Chinese proverbs on the blackboard out of a blue,DURING CLASS TIME.

2. About her "kepo-ness". Let's just say that she's trying to be friendly. Haha. Eh should appreciate it ho, coz she doesn't do that these days.

3. About her crazy organizational skill, you should see her preparing for exams. She would take out all the notes, every single piece of information about that particular subject, arrange them in a circle around her. THEN she would start revising. The big pencil box you're talking about, you know she has a particular place for every single pen and pencil inside the pencil box? You cannot simply chuck in as you like after you use it. I call that insanity. LoL.

hmmm...in the 1st place, i don't even rmb crying o saving u frm anyth...haha!!..
the invitation was done so that parents know what's going on...cos when parents scold sis when they dono where she went etc...so the invitation would serve as official doc like those tuition schools wud issue to parents to ask for consent b4 a class field trip...guess i was thinking too much, seriously!
the mental arithmetic incident, i don rmb...mb i asked ur school because i knew i had a way to know ur name later?...weird me...drilling for mental arithmetic competition...i rmb goin to the one in Sabah, Batu Lintang n KL...
bt intervals between 3D n 1D, i don think i know everyone but most of u la...Jiing Ying actually picked up 'shadow' font from looking at my writings on blackboard..n let's just say i like knowing new frens...n the reason eng say i don't do that these days is cos i've been hurt in some ways...so it's better not to be too friendly to ppl...i still like knowing new ppl tho
N bt my Huge Pencil Case...bought it at Hikosen Cara, Wisma San Yang in Sibu when GB went for GBSL camp...my fav so far...can muat my calculator, project pens, oth colour pens (metallic, milky), normal stationary etc...n yes, i used to place certain pens in certain areas for easy retrieval...n all pen tips directed the same way to minimise effect of ink leakage, if it occurs...but it's dirty now...i'm using another 1 which i gt for my bday few yrs back.vy small n not my preference...but use it 1st la, haha...till i spot 1 that's suitable.
Bt the proverb thinggy...i really can't recall!i guess u're right to say it's random
for revision i'll spend a lot of time tidying up my table before i can put all related materials on it (within reach) n start revision properly...so normal days quite hard to study
